NZSP/Medical Staffing International Achievement Award 2007 for Physiotherapy
Dr
Sandra Bassett is no stranger to research projects, being the Senior Lecturer
at AUT's School of Physiotherapy.
Sandra has seen her work published in scientific journals
no less than ten times, and frequently presents at conferences. Winning
the Award allows Sandra to present her latest research on a “comparison
of home-based physiotherapy with adherence enhancing strategies versus
clinic-based physiotherapy rehabilitation for patients with ankle sprains”
at the WCPT Conference in Vancouver in June.
“I was really pleased when I heard that I’d
won the Award”, says Sandra. “It’s great to be recognised
by others in my profession – and it means that my research is both
useful and meaningful.”
REPORT OF ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN WITH THE MEDICAL STAFFING INTERNATIONAL
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR PHYSIOTHERAPY: RESEARCH CATEGORY.
Being granted this award assisted me financially to
attend and present a paper at the World Congress of Physical Therapists,
Vancouver, 2 to 7 June 2007. The paper was titled Comparison of home-based
physiotherapy with adherence enhancing strategies versus clinic-based
physiotherapy rehabilitation for patients with ankle sprains. The study
presented in the conference paper found that a physiotherapy programme
undertaken primarily at home is a safe and viable option, with the patients’
psychological status and recovery not being disadvantaged.
I presented my paper as a platform presentation on Sunday 3 June 2007
in a session titled Musculoskeletal-Lower Limb 1. There were five papers
presented in this session and mine was the first of four papers that
focused on ankle sprains. The session was well attended and my paper
generated a lot of interest, in terms of the implementation of the study
and its findings. Since the presentation I have had communication with
overseas physiotherapists and researchers about the methodology of the
study and its use clinically.
Overall I found the paper and poster presentations at the conference
thought provoking and by attending these sessions I broadened my perspective
on physiotherapy and physiotherapy research. An important consequence
of attending the World Congress of Physical Therapists and presenting
a paper at the conference is that I have been able to make contact with
international researchers. Such contacts may lead to future collaboration
in research. This contact has been enhanced by the publication of the
study in Physical Therapy, September 2007.
I wish to thank Medical Staffing International for awarding me the scholarship
and the New Zealand Society of Physiotherapists for the support they
gave me at the World Congress of Physical Therapists and during and
after the application process for this award.
