NZSP/Medical Staffing International Achievement Award for Physiotherapy
Robyn, who only found out that colleagues had nominated her for the NZSP/Medical Staffing International Achievement Award for Physiotherapy just before she was told she had won it, was recognised for a lifetime of service to her profession. While Robyn's career has been dedicated to Physiotherapy, it was only in 1993, when she moved to Dunedin, that she was exposed to the benefits of acupuncture. She enthusiastically became involved in the Physiotherapists Acupuncture Association of New Zealand (PAANZ), which ran both basic and extension training courses for the profession. Ever since, Robyn has combined physiotherapy with acupuncture, and has been closely involved in the SIGs Executive Committee, from president to registrar - in fact, she's done all of the Exec roles except secretary and treasurer, committing a tremendous amount of time and energy to the organisation, on top of raising a family and continuing her professional career. In 2004, Robyn realised that she was interested in learning Japanese acupuncture, a gentle form of the treatment which works with energy on the surface of the skin. In comparison with Chinese acupuncture, in which you introduce the needle more deeply into the body, the Japanese form is very reliant on pulse taking and other forms of diagnosis that physiotherapists don't do a lot of. Traveling to Japan in 2004, Robyn recalls the environment as amazing: many of the sensei lecturers were blind, yet could diagnose a person's health through the tips of their fingers, and Robyn was inspired to continue her study and learning in the field. Following her success in the NZSP/Medical Staffing International Achievement Award for Physiotherapy, and using the proceeds from her win, Robyn traveled once again to Japan, for a four day conference and seminar. Robyn says that she benefited greatly from the second session in Japan, and she thanks Medical Staffing International for its financial assistance with the opportunity. "The second trip gave me a much-needed boost of encouragement from both the sensei and other therapists who have been using this style of treatment for some years," she says. Robyn is not the only NZSP/Medical Staffing International Achievement Award for Physiotherapy award winner with a Japanese connection: 2004's winner, Carol Armitage of Westside Clinic in Palmerston North, utilised her prize money to assist with travel to Tokyo where she spoke at a world seminar on posture, balance and energy. Westside Clinic also won the business of the year award at the 2005 Vision Manawatu Business Awards. Both awards have assisted Carol and her husband Paul with the extraordinary growth of their business over the last 18 months.
